Beer Brewing: The Basics
Any celebration would not be complete without the right beverage. Some people prefer drinks that are more sophisticated, such as wine and champagne. On the other hand, some prefer the simplicity of a bottle of malt liquor. Many fail to realise that achieving the right flavour needs meticulous preparation. Some factors to consider include temperature control, fermentation, and germination. This can greatly affect the quality of the drink.
The process of making beer begins by turning a cereal grain mix of either barley, rye, or wheat into malt. This requires the grains to be germinated to create enzymes. Afterwards, the mixture is then dried and roasted. Next, it is saturated with water in order to create a mash. Once it has be finely ground, it is then transferred to a lauter tun, wherein strains separate the grains from the fluids.
The liquids are mixed with hops and other flavouring ingredients and then boiled in a cooking tun. The mixture is then moved to a fermenting equipment wherein yeast is added. This process can either be done warm, cold, or spontaneous (meaning wild yeast is used).
Temperature plays a major role in this procedure and affects the quality of the finished product. This method is quite sensitive to weather and climate conditions. In addition, a level of microbiological quality is maintained in order to achieve the right consistency, which means it should be closely monitored. Even the measurement of the temperature should be done in the most hygienic way, as much as possible, without direct contact with the beer. As such, digital thermometers are useful tools. This is important to measure and maintain the right temperature of the mash.
There are some devices that are detached from the container while others are attached inside to get an accurate reading. It is crucial for the brewing mix to flourish in the right condition, not too warm or cold. Calibration is done to ensure that the thermometer gets the accurate amount of hotness or coldness inside the brewery. Once fermentation is finished, the beer is conditioned to near freezing conditions for the yeast to settle. Depending on the type, this can take two to four weeks at least. The last step is filtering, which helps enhance the flavour and set the colour of the drink.
